Stapleford Abbotts started life as a quaint parish with over 100 acres of woodland and two large manor houses Albyns and Knolls Hill, neither of which stand today.
The manor of Stapleford Abbotts was bequeathed to the abbey in 1013 when the Lord of the Manor of Stapleford was miraculously cured of a long illness and gifted the Manor to demonstrate his gratitude. The Abbey kept Stapleford until the Dissolution after which the manor and parish was known as Stapleford Abbotts.
During the 18th and 19th centuries more dwellings were erected and the population sporadically grew to a staggering 731 in 1951. At that time, much of the population centred around what is now the village of Stapleford Abbotts until development began towards the south in the 20th century.
